I was sitting in my police car, typing up a report, when a woman walked up and asked if she could talk to me for a moment.
I said, “Of course,” and got out of my car to listen.
The first thing she said was, “Your life matters to me.”
She told me, “I don’t see you as just a ‘white cop.’ I see you as a human… because we are all human, and we are all the same.”
Then she asked, “Can I give you a hug?” I said yes.
I told her, “Your life matters to me too.”
We stood there and talked for about twenty minutes—about life, about everything happening in the world.
In those twenty minutes, it wasn’t a cop and a citizen talking. It wasn’t a police officer and a Black woman. It was just two people having a conversation.
Before she left, she handed me a small Bible and said, “I will be praying for you.”
We need more people in this world like her. ❤️
